Dr. Bustamante

Mario Bustamante, MD

Dr. Mario Bustamante is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon serving the San Antonio Metropolitan Area and surrounding counties for over 30 years.

He was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, where he attended medical school and graduated first in his class from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey.

Upon graduating in 1980, Dr. Bustamante and his family decided to relocate to Austin, TX where he studied English at the University of Texas. Shortly after he moved to Houston where he worked for various hospitals in the Houston Medical Center,  he then moved to San Antonio where he completed his first of 3 residencies at Baptist Memorial Healthcare System in Clinical and Surgical Pathology.

Post-residency, Dr. Bustamante accepted a fellowship in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and subsequently worked as an Assistant Professor at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas for 2 years.  His experience at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was wonderful, but the Minnesota & Kansas weather influenced his decision to move back to Texas.

He accepted a teaching position at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the Department of Pathology.  During this time he conducted advanced research for breast cancer tumors and  traveled across the United States lecturing and sharing his expertise and knowledge of tumors.

Dr. Bustamante expressed an inclination for Orthopedics early in his medical career.  After spending two years as an attending professor, Dr. Bustamante decided to apply for a third residency in Orthopedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center. At age 34, transitioning from doctor back to resident was challenging but his desire and commitment made it a success.  He worked and trained as a resident in the hospital for five years.

He launched his private practice in the heart of downtown San Antonio in 1999, where he built a very successful practice, and moved to his current location on the north side  in 2014. He continues to practice “the old fashion way”, as he describes is where he sees every patient face-to-face and where you can get an appointment to see him within 48 hours.

Dr. Bustamante enjoys spending any free time cooking and sharing his life experiences with his beloved family and friends.
